Ilford Wanderers RFC 33
Stanford le Hope RFC 12
Ilford Wanderers, already promoted to London NE3, produced a commanding display putting the icing on a season that must rank
high in their illustrious history. Probably too many penalties against them for the Wanderers to call this their best performance of the season,
but they still produced more than enough quality rugby to beat a game Stanford team, also ,perhaps, refuting the idea that Ilford are purely
forward based. Indeed they had one try disallowed for a forward pass, that was all about pace and dexterity.
But Ilford soon got into their stride, Jack Handley scoring his first from a rolling maul, and then Centre Graham Bailey thumping through Stanfords defence creating breakdowns from which Ilford probed the blindside and a breakthrough saw Captain Jason Taylor
step through a gap to give a sublime pass to Tight head Jack Handley who had run a great angle to smash through and score his second.
Wanderers kept the pressure on to score a third through constant scrummage pressure forcing Stanford into collapsing a scrum to give
the ref no option but a penalty try. Stanford kept themselves in the game by cashing in on some sloppy Ilford off loading, to score under the posts.
21-7 at half time , Stanford came out and had their best period of the game with their scrumhalf going on a mazy run to score. This score fired Ilford back into action, marching their way back into opposition territory. Stanford had a scrum on their own 5m line, Ilford took it against the head and pressured the defence until Hooker Damon Marson crashed over. Ilford were now back in control and some smart thinking from Taylor taking a quick tap penalty, split the defence and put scrum half Morgan Brown over for the sealing try. Coach Martin Jones commented " it was a clinical display of controlled rugby and due reward for a great season".
